FAA will examine the cockpit of the Boeing 737 MAX 10

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said Friday that it will review Boeing’s proposed enhanced flight crew alerting system for the Boeing 737 MAX 10. Which will include an enhanced synthetic angle of attack system and a means to disable stall and overspeed alerts.

In December 2022, Congress agreed to suspend the deadline for imposing a new safety standard for modern cockpit alerts on the MAX 7 and MAX 10. But required the aircraft to be upgraded with future safety enhancements within three years of the MAX 10’s certification. These requirements were adopted by Congress as part of aircraft certification reform passed after two fatal 737 MAX crashes that killed 346 people in Indonesia and Ethiopia. Resulting in the aircraft being grounded for 20 months.

Max 8 and Max 9 FAA permission

For years, Boeing, which presently sells the MAX 8 and MAX 9, has battled to get FAA permission for two future MAX models: the longer MAX 10 and the shorter MAX 7. The CEO of Southwest Airlines, Bob Jordan, told Reuters on Thursday that he anticipates the MAX 7 being approved by August 2026. That the US company would start operating the compact single-aisle aircraft in the first quarter of 2027.

Due to issues with the engines’ deicing system, Boeing has experienced delays in certifying its MAX 7 and MAX 10 planes. Its 777X wide-body aircraft’s certification has also been delayed. The FAA lifted the 38 aircraft cap that had been in place since January 2024 and permitted the company to raise manufacturing of the 737 MAX to 42 units per month. This device was put in place following an in-flight incident that same year in which an Alaska Airlines 737 MAX 9. It took off without four crucial bolts in a door stopper, opening a sizable breach in the fuselage at 4,900 meters. Widespread safety and quality control shortcomings in Boeing’s manufacture were revealed by the disaster.
