After software changes, the US concludes its inquiry into Tesla’s remote driving capabilities

Tesla NHTSA remote drive

After concluding that this driving feature was only connected to low-speed incidents, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) declared on Monday that an investigation into nearly 2.6 million Tesla vehicles pertaining to a feature that enables users to move their cars remotely was closed.

Following reports of multiple incidents, the agency began looking into the «Autumn Smart Summon» feature in early 2025. Using a smartphone app, this method enables users to transfer cars over small distances in parking lots or on private land.

The government reported that it received reports of about 100 accidents with no fatalities or injuries, and came to the conclusion that the characteristic was mostly associated with low-speed collisions that resulted in modest property damage.

According to the NHTSA, the majority of reported occurrences included automobiles crashing into barriers like gates, garage doors, or parked cars, frequently at the beginning of a Summon session when vision or awareness of the surroundings was limited.

There were no recorded events involving the vehicle being towed, airbag activation, or a significant collision.

The agency declared that further action was not necessary due to the accidents’ low frequency and severity.
