Trump claims that China purchased 200 Boeing aircraft and that the demand may drop to 750

U.S. President Donald Trump informed reporters on Friday that China had committed to buy 200 Boeing aircraft, with a potential order of up to 750 units. He added that the aircraft would have engines from GE Aerospace.

Trump told reporters that the agreement «includes approximately 200 aircraft and a commitment for up to 750 if they do a good job.» Additional information regarding the transaction was not immediately available, including the kind of jets and the anticipated delivery date.

If completed, the orders would be Boeing’s first significant agreement with China in almost ten years. Due to trade disputes between Beijing and Washington, the U.S. maker was essentially locked out of the world’s second-largest aviation market.

It was not immediately clear how many of the 200 aircraft announced by Trump represented new business for Boeing versus aircraft already on its order book.

People familiar with China’s purchasing patterns said that Beijing had previously bundled new orders with repeat announcements when presenting trade packages tied to diplomatic visits by U.S. and European leaders.

There was no immediate announcement of the order from Boeing. Aircraft manufacturers typically disclose major deals once they have been finalized. Boeing did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
